Usage logging?
-
Hi, I'm new here. I've been playing with Zeroshell for awhile but support is pretty limited, little activity on their forum, so maybe Pfsense will do what I want. Anyway, I'm setting up a wifi network for a summer camp. Strictly internet access, no local computer-computer activity. What I need Pfsense to do is run the captive portal for user logon, no vouchers or anything like that… but I do want to be able to view the user's usage (a list of all users, preferably sorted by usage) so we can give a "gentle reminder" to users who are using too much bandwidth (it's a satellite system with limited data allowance). Ideally, throttling when a user exceeds his monthly data usage would be nice, but not necessary. Can Pfsense do this?

You need to add freeradius package in the setup and provision in the radius your limits.

Do I need the freeradius package if I only need logging and not throttling?

Have you considered Gargoyle Router instead? You could set up a fairly hands-off quota and throttle system.

No, I need a captive portal to control and log access by user account, regardless of what computer or device they're using.
Right now Zeroshell seems to be working, so I don't want to upset things. If Zeroshell's rudimentary logging becomes a problem then I'll revisit other solutions like pfSense.
