BF3 ping times with PFSense

My setup for BF3:

PC: i7 with 16GB ram + 128GB SSD + 2*560 SLI-connection
Connection: 8/3 Grade A
Connection between pc and pfsense is only 10/100 due to switch

When playing on connection is used by: My playmachine(BF3, skype), ps3 with netflix(kids), laptop(wife using facebook), 2 neighbor machines

and ping is something between 3-60 ms, caused of server distance.

I wouldn't blame pfsense, but look your hardware beneath

A decent NIC in your PC helps. I use a Intel pro 1000 PT card, you can often pick them up cheap on ebay.

I also recon a pfsense box wont hurt you ping times or your connection stability.

Your local network has pretty much 0 affect on your ping times assuming you are not using wireless at any point, which might cause higher latencies. I get sub 1 ms latency up to 4 hops from my PC (pfsense,ISP gateway, .., ..).

Well, This is nothing to do with BF3 but i play MW3 with dedicated servers (if this helps) sorry BF3 fans!

Depends where the server is located, Im guessing your from USA? So as long as your on a USA server then you will have low pings times
As stated a good nic card (mines an 3com intel chipset)

I play on the Europe servers and get 13ms - 17ms from UK to France with OVH systems
On one of the weekends i looked into my pfsense and my connection is used my PC MW3/(Stream) Zello, xbox 360 (my little one), desktop pc (girlfriends using facebook/twitter/zello/skype video calling), android tablet used by next door (2mbits down and 2mbits up) used with traffic sharp.

CPU: 12%/ 29% RAM

Internet: 100 Mbits down and 10 Mbits upload cable ISP
As you can see, The pfsense box dont need to be that powerful for a good ping however wireless might cause higher pings as said before ^^

Internet: 30mbps down and 1mbits upload cable ISP

CPU:39% / RAM sit about 52%
Hes wife uses her laptop for facebook and emails and streams netflix and bbc iplayer and he plays MW3 all at the sametime. Until they have there baby

Hi Guys I am also having a Ping problem with my new Pfsense Build. The main issue is when do a speedtest from speedtest.net my ping is always 200+ms..
I setup my box for Online gaming and Torrents. I checked to see if I am getting any dropped packets and getting 0% dropped. I can ping the Lan to Pfsense and Wan to Google and speedtest.net good with no problems. I have installed arpwatch banwithh HAVP pftBlocker Snort and Squid.

I used http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0JFfpG4BWI to setup my box..

Just wan't to know everything is good before I mess with Traffic shaping and all the other good stuff.. thanks

this is not true… a crappy switch or crappy nic can affect your latency.

after switching to my pfsense box (Intel D2500CC with Dual-Intel-Nic's) I noticed not just a lower Ping to my Gateway, but also a lower latency range (monitored with smokeping).

Your sig shows your box as having 2GB of memory. HAVP + Snort + squid can very easily eat up more than 4GB of memory. Are you using swap? That could cause a huge slow down…

I don't agree with this at all. Quality of drivers and makeup of all network hardware from every hop affect your latency.

I don't agree with this at all. Quality of drivers and makeup of all network hardware from every hop affect your latency.

Only for high bandwidth applications. Games use a few kbps. The latency will not increase beyond 1ms. The worst increase will be from the PC's NIC & drivers. Even then, only high bandwidth will aggravate the latency increase.
