PFSense 2 Book Release Date
-
Great news! I did buy Pfsense 2 cookbook it wasn't that bad. All it is though is a bunch of guides there are some explanations but I would rather buy the book from the people who know Pfsense the best (The people who made it). When the book is available if you buy the paper back edition (Like I did with the first one) will the .pdf version be a free download or is that a separate purchase?
It will most likely be structured like the current version, where the Kindle/electronic version is available for an additional price over the print copy. I don't know exactly what the costs or available formats will be yet. I think, but I don't know for certain, that we will have a way to purchase an electronic copy directly from us rather than through Amazon or similar.
P.S. Don't beat me up too bad about buying the cookbook, I thought I was supporting you guys/gals.
If you had to buy and read the cookbook, you've already been punished enough. (kidding… maybe. :-)

Haha you're not joking. I had a chance to flip through it… And you might as well just click through the menus on an installation of PFSense... That's my opinion obviously but read the reviews on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/pfSense-2-Cookbook-ebook/dp/B0055Y79EG/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1374864522&sr=1-2&keywords=pfsense
But thank you much for your response. I'm really looking forward to the new book & am really glad I'm back in charge of an IT shop & get to implement it again. I am anxiously awaiting the day I can drop these crappy Zywall USG 100 Firewalls off the top of the building. Besides completely missing actual port forwarding (they only have virtual servers & it works terrible) they're insanely buggy. The slave somehow takes over the VIP sometimes daily & the network traffic goes to hell. Have to login & reboot it. I remember PFSense 2 having that issue but that was while it was in Alpha & it only happened if the line actually failed. This one tries to assume master even when there's been no issues.
So, is there anyway to purchase the unfinished book without having to pay $600 for a support subscription? I'm not 100% sure I would want to do that but depending on how soon they approve the money for the hardware I may be quite interested in that option. It appears there may be a torrent of it out there (there are tons for the cookbook) but I would never pirate something from an Open Source project like this. If I end up needing it before official release I would be OK with paying regular price for the unfinished book & buy it again when finished. I'm not 100% sure I could get them interested in purchasing support. I'm going to try & move PFSense into our production and that would be the only way I could justify a support contract of any sort.

That sounds … fun.

There isn't a way to get a copy of the book yet aside from as a support customer. It's not that we wouldn't like to do that, but as far as I'm aware we can't legally do that the way things are setup, since there are others involved (publisher, etc, etc)
We try to spot torrents and sites that host the book and send them takedown notices (the DMCA is good for something … sometimes ... but not much use outside of the US) but it doesn't always happen. The torrent I saw just now was the old book.
It will be coming out very soon in the next couple months, so the wait won't be too much longer. We just don't have specific dates yet, but it would be well before the end of the year at the very latest.

Yes… That's what you get though when you become VP of IT for a company that's never had any IT personnel and things get cobbled together by a web developer with a physics degree.
But I eagerly await the release of the book, I'm sure it's going to be even better than the first which was amazing. I'll keep trying to spread the gospel of PFSense.

i just got gold member, and have access to the draft (will we have access to the full blown electronic copy ?) but for sure I will buy the hard copy. Do you guys plan to put it at pre-order on amazon sooner than the release ?

Yes, it will be on Amazon once we get all of the publishing details worked out.

Hurry up!

I ordered the first book. I plan on getting the new one as well. Anymore news on the progress and release date and is there some other books you would also recommend. Covering 2.x ?
-
No date for release yet.
There aren't any other books for 2.x that we can recommend.
-
It will be great if you add chapters about some popular packages (like squid) in new edition.
-
That's what I thought. All the other books I found had terrible reviews. That's why I purchased the first book. Thanks for your response and I'm waiting in anticipation for the release announcement. Hopefully it won't be to much longer
