I have been having some issue with openvpn client on windows 8, it seems that it cannot get the IP from server and is stuck on ARP flush.
the client was installed and executed with Admin rights but still cannot get the IP.

Make sure you update to the most current version of the pfSense OpenVPN Client Export package, and on the client, uninstall any instance of OpenVPN and the TAP driver you have, and then download a fresh client and try it again.

thanks for your reply,
unfortunately I have tried all three client (2 from pfsense's export client utility and 1 from the community site)
there is definitely something wrong with windows 8's compatibility, even after finally managing to get it working the wifi would randomly disconnect or Ethernet port would restart.
I have abandoned using win8, frankly not a very big fan of that tiles crap, going back to windows 7~
cheers

Win8 is not without its quirks, that's for sure. That said, if you upgraded from 7 to 8 you might have some issues from that.
My laptop upgraded from 7 to 8 and then 8.1, and my ethernet driver would stop at least once per day until I forcefully installed an older version. USB mouse would randomly stop also.
Then the HDD died in that laptop and I started with a fresh Windows 8 install and it's been perfect ever since even with the same drivers that were problematic before.

I had a full clean install Windows8 on an old HP laptop (from Vista days - worth $US40 to get rid of Vista. At some point it started intermittently refusing to connect to my home WiFi - a reboot would (usually) get it going again. After online upgrade to 8.1 I haven't had the problem again. Maybe some dodgy Windows Update in the Win8 series? that was fixed in 8.1? YMMV - mine certainly has.
But when the underlying connections are up, OpenVPN client has been doing its thing fine.
