Ok so I have seen this issue documented a few times here but not one person seems to have an actual awnser.

Today I was having some internet issues so I had to reset my cable modem and i restarted PFsense. The cable modem did not give an ip address and pfsense failed to configure web/gui during its boot up sequnce.

This meant I was not able to access the WebGui after it finished booting.

Does anyone from support or the community have any idea about this ????

This has been documented to effect many other people in these other threads (see I did search first) :
Multiple Threads about not being able to access WebGui during boot up when missing WAN IP

      Thanks for the help

Was it hanging on trying to get a DHCP for WAN on boot? So it didn't finish booting?
        Have a boot log?
Were you able to SSH to it?

Yes it did hang on trying to get DHCP for WAN (since my cable modem didn't want to give it an ip ) but it did boot .

No I don't have any boot logs but its easy enough for me to reproduce (I just unplug the wan) .

If the boot log will help then I will unplug it when I get home if u tell me where to grab the boot log from (never grabbed it before).

          Thanks

Need to see what it does and where it gets to really.

            1. system.log
            2. dmesg.boot
            3. if you ssh in and choose to restart the web configurator does it give you an error? Does it restart? Paste results.

I did try to restart the web configurator via ssh and I believe it said something to the effect of so such pid but the exact error I don't remember.

It did also fail to start webconfigurator when the Wan was unplugged during boot up sequence.

I am getting off work in an hour or so when I get home I'll unplug the WAN reboot let it fail and then grab you the log u specified.

              Thanks again

Ok I have collected the requested log.

                Of interest is this:```
                Feb 28 21:03:24 pfsense php: rc.bootup: The command '/usr/local/sbin/lighttpd -f /var/etc/lighty-webConfigurator.conf' returned exit code '255', the output was '2014-02-28 21:03:23: (network.c.385) can't bind to port: 0.0.0.0 443 Address already in use'

Looks like its complaining about not being able to bind to 443 (ssl) for 0.0.0.0 (WAN IP) because its already in use.

I do have a 3rd party ssl cert in case it helps. Below is full output of both logs.

                  Hey!
Has this issue ever been resoled? I am experiencing the exact same issue.

I resolved the issue by re-installing pfsense from scratch and then re-configuring it all over.

Not really a great answer but I was never able to get to the bottom of this. The best I could determine is something specific in my config was creating this behavior but I have no idea what.

You had something setup to bind to port 443 other than the webGUI (that's the "can't bind to port: … Address already in use" part). The WAN restart triggered a service restart, and the ordering was such that the other service "won" and grabbed the port before the web interface could.

Well CMB that makes sense though this problem was over a year old I do remember having openvpn set to use port 443 via TCP. Maybe that is what was hijacking the port. Lol now if I'd only figured that out a year ago.

02user123 it may help to post the same logs I posted to see if your issue is similar or something else with the same symptoms.

Better late than never I guess? :) I apparently missed this thread a year ago.

Yeah if you're going to bind OpenVPN to 443, you'll want to change the port of the web interface to something else. While OpenVPN binding to a specific IP as it does rather than * will generally work fine, in the case of a DHCP interface that has no IP, it won't. A DHCP interface has an IP of 0.0.0.0 while it's attempting to get a lease. From the perspective of OpenVPN, then its IP to bind is 0.0.0.0:443. Well, that's the same as *:443, so it takes precedence. We'll get something into 2.3 probably to control which IPs the management services bind to, which could make that scenario workable (bind one to LAN, one to WAN).

Question - If you open a WAN port to 443, how much of a denial of service / annoyance attack on that open port would it take to make the web gui inaccessible to everyone, including people on the LAN?

Oh man! Thank you guys! I have OpenVPN set to port 443/tcp, so no wonder the web configurator cannot bind to that port if it's too slow.

So yes, I will bind the web configurator to a different port then. Thanks!

Although…OpenVPN should only bind to the WAN interface, while the web configurator should only bind to the LAN interface. Is there an option to configure that?

3 years since the original post and as of 2.3.4 this issue persists.  I ran into this yesterday and had to put my own DHCP server on the WAN to get that interface to DHCP an IP so that webConfigurator would even start.

I need webConfigurator to make changes to the WAN so it would actually connect to my ISP.  Major catch 22 here.  Why on earth would webConfigurator fail because it can't bind to the WAN IP of 0.0.0.0?.  That's absurd.  It should always bind to the (surely static) LAN address irrespective of what's going on with the WAN, up, down, misconfigured, or whatever.

I keep wanting to contribute to the project financially and recommend pfSense to clients but every time I turn around, there's a new bug that's years old in my exceptionally basic home setup.

For anyone else with this issue, you just need to be certain that your WAN gets an IP on startup, via whatever absurdity you have to pull in the shell to make it happen.
