      @bennyc:

True… but digital form is much more difficult to control, it tends to lead a life of its own, rather fast.
So while I understand the motivation to make a paper version out of it and don't question the work & good intentions, the fact is that this (almost) release has been dangling before our nose for already quite some time. (carrot-and-stick approach  ::))

Guess we need to consider ourselves lucky the software releases don't use the same pace  ;D

Actually, part of the solution means making both the book and the software rev faster.

      Think:  continuous development.

This requires several things to change about the historic pfSense project.  The first change is in-place, as we now have dedicated editors (one is a former teacher) who are "pair editing" the book.  When that process completes we will fix a few formatting issues, and have everything in-place to keep the book updated and in-sync with what is happening on the software side.  Obviously, the 'electronic' edition(s) will be more up-to-date than a printed copy, but this and the additional costs are a downside for any hardcopy book.

        Hello,

I have purchased a gold support membership, and am pretty happy: the autoconfig backup is pretty awesome: It keeps copies of my misconfiguration attempts, so I can roll them back as needed!  ;D

Further accolades are needed though: Not only are the beta-docs in pdf form, but epub and mobi(kindle-readable) too!  THAT's been my life-saver.  The kindle Suuuu–ucks for reading pdf documents.  Even though I can't share my bookmarks and highlights between devices, I can live with that.

I have a couple of requests though:

        1. when there's a new version of the beta-doc in place, is it announced anywhere?
        2. (never mind, I will post THIS thought where it belongs...

Thanks for your time, the $100 is worth it!

I agree about the gold.  I got it while I was still playing with pfsense on a test box and the book really helped me pick hardware to actually put pfsense to work (and it's working beautifully).

Suggestion: Publish the PFSense 2 book in it's current state before it is outdated. Perhaps we really are waiting for the PFSense 3 book to be finished before the #2 bok can be released? You guys need the latest release for paying customers. I can understand that.

How about now? Is it still being edited? Also, if I opt for the Gold subscription, which tbh I'll most likely completely disregard after downloading the book, will I get access to a digital edition of the final book or do I need to purchase it again when it comes out in 2030?

The softcopy version available through gold membership has been updated from time to time as editing happens. When the "final" version is out, then you can download that through the member portal.

As the Greek philosopher Isosceles used to say, "There are 3 sides to every triangle."

I've got a gold membership. There appear to be three 2.1 versions, the "draft" pdf, the "mobi" and the "epub" versions. Are they all the same? I can't open the epub or mobi in Lubuntu, but the draft pdf is OK. Just want to know if I need the mobi or the epub for anything.

The epub version works well with Androids e-reader application. They are the same document though as far as I know.

All three are the same. Different e-readers require different formats or behave better with other formats. For example, Kindle only works with MOBI in the right format, but others such as FBReader can read ePub, Mobi, or many others. PDFs work on most platforms in a variety of readers but may not be read the same depending on the software.

I see a lot of posts here… But the question is always the same, is there an expected date for the final book???? I mean in 6 months, 1 year, ... I think the authors have a plan for the release date  ;)!

I'm thinking of getting the subscription so I also get a copy of the book. To support this project and most of all to have some documentation since I have no idea how to really setup PFSense.

Now I'm thinking when it would be good for me to get a copy of this book.
When I have the book for 2.1 can I still use it when 2.2 comes out or is it very different?

Most of the changes for 2.2 are behind the scenes, switching to a FreeBSD 10 base. There should be no problems using the book with it. There are notes regarding 2.2 changes in the draft.

As Stephen says, it's largely similar.  CARP and some of the VPN bits look a bit different.

I suspect that the book will never be "finished".  Instead, it's a living document that gets updated regularly.  Maybe when pfSense 3.x comes out, we can consider the 2.x Definitive Guide to be finished.

Ok, that's good to know. It will not take long before I'm going to get the gold subscription then.
