That stuff is hard to block. you can get most of it blocked from packages like squidguard and dansguardian.

It may be easier to use OpenDNS, which filters even before it enters your firewall.

I use a combination of Dansguardian and OpenDNS. Dans does both blacklist and content (real-time) filtering based on phrase matching.

Except if a link is an IP, the OpenDNS would not come into play.

even if it is an IP dansguardian and squidguard both look for key words in the content and not in just the name of the website.
OpenDNS as part of the solution would keep most if not all porn out. Perhaps even legitimate sites … l

You are right, of course. However if a user is smart enough to find a porn site's ip address, take that to your lan and enter it there, I would argue he is smart enough to circumvent most other blocking techniques.

I'd argue that dansguardian has a lot of value regardless… blacklists are only as good as they can be kept up to date - which is nearly impossible. In addition, dans gives you the flexibility to leave some sites open and still know that it will do a reasonable job of catching and blocking inappropriate content based on the keyword matching.

I agree. Just because a user has his smarty pants on doesn't mean you shouldn't try with all means possible.
