All three are the same. Different e-readers require different formats or behave better with other formats. For example, Kindle only works with MOBI in the right format, but others such as FBReader can read ePub, Mobi, or many others. PDFs work on most platforms in a variety of readers but may not be read the same depending on the software.

I see a lot of posts here… But the question is always the same, is there an expected date for the final book???? I mean in 6 months, 1 year, ... I think the authors have a plan for the release date  ;)!

I'm thinking of getting the subscription so I also get a copy of the book. To support this project and most of all to have some documentation since I have no idea how to really setup PFSense.

Now I'm thinking when it would be good for me to get a copy of this book.
When I have the book for 2.1 can I still use it when 2.2 comes out or is it very different?

Most of the changes for 2.2 are behind the scenes, switching to a FreeBSD 10 base. There should be no problems using the book with it. There are notes regarding 2.2 changes in the draft.

As Stephen says, it's largely similar.  CARP and some of the VPN bits look a bit different.

I suspect that the book will never be "finished".  Instead, it's a living document that gets updated regularly.  Maybe when pfSense 3.x comes out, we can consider the 2.x Definitive Guide to be finished.

Ok, that's good to know. It will not take long before I'm going to get the gold subscription then.

Paul47, they are all the same content, just different formats.

cmb has agreed to focus his near-term efforts on the missing content for 2.2 (I'm also giving him an editor to work with.)

It would be handy if the on-line drafts available to Gold members had a revision date or number or… so that we can see if the online version has been updated.
That would save people giving errata/comments on old versions,...

Forget about the PFsense 2 book. I'm not going to buy it. I have already learned all I need to know by trial and error and searching the Internet. You missed an opportunity to sell this book to me.

                              Diplomatic Jim.  ;)
I'm sufficiently familar with pfSense that I don't need to consult the docs daily however everytime I look at the draft copy I have I learn something new. In fact just this morning on a flight home from Germany I found that the only book on my tablet was pfSense draft guide. An hour well spent.  :)

Even if this is not exactly related to the release date, the question came up in the german sub forums, if there is or would be a translated version for those not as well-spoken of the English language.
(Same came up for UI/interface translations, but I don't see much use of a translated GUI as most phrases would end up the same anyway. And others would be plain dead ugly or lead to huge - as in wide - menu items as german words can be quite crude)

So I wanted to ask 3 points:

                                      1. is there a thought/plan/whatever for a translated version of the pfsense book?
                                      2. would a community based translation be possible (to help out)?
                                      3. what about books (or smaller documentation) of others not involved with pfSense or ESF? As an example: would it be possible for me to hack together some kind of "pfsense in practice" like book(let) and distribute it via print-on-demand or something alike? What about screenshots and mentions of the pfSense/ESF trademarks? Would that simply be tolerated (after clearance perhaps) or would that have to be some kind of licensed? (as print on demand wouldn't make anyone rich, that would put a damper on it)

Just asking as that question popped up quite a few time in the last weeks/months and as the "seed" of pfsense spreads it attracts more users not that adapt with the english language or expert lingo.

                                          • that would be a big investment.  However, other people have undertaken Portuguese and Japanese translations.

                                          • yes, it's possible.  Renato is currently tasked with setting up the translation tools again (they were originally in Brazil).

                                          • It wouldn't be "tolerated", it would be welcomed, especially if you worked with us to comply with the usage on the marks.
