        Diplomatic Jim.  ;)
I'm sufficiently familar with pfSense that I don't need to consult the docs daily however everytime I look at the draft copy I have I learn something new. In fact just this morning on a flight home from Germany I found that the only book on my tablet was pfSense draft guide. An hour well spent.  :)

Always a kind word and a witty response.

            @phil.davis:

It would be handy if the on-line drafts available to Gold members had a revision date or number or… so that we can see if the online version has been updated.

            Second that  ;D

It's a good idea.  I'll see if I can't get cmb on it.

Even if this is not exactly related to the release date, the question came up in the german sub forums, if there is or would be a translated version for those not as well-spoken of the English language.
(Same came up for UI/interface translations, but I don't see much use of a translated GUI as most phrases would end up the same anyway. And others would be plain dead ugly or lead to huge - as in wide - menu items as german words can be quite crude)

So I wanted to ask 3 points:

                1. is there a thought/plan/whatever for a translated version of the pfsense book?
                2. would a community based translation be possible (to help out)?
                3. what about books (or smaller documentation) of others not involved with pfSense or ESF? As an example: would it be possible for me to hack together some kind of "pfsense in practice" like book(let) and distribute it via print-on-demand or something alike? What about screenshots and mentions of the pfSense/ESF trademarks? Would that simply be tolerated (after clearance perhaps) or would that have to be some kind of licensed? (as print on demand wouldn't make anyone rich, that would put a damper on it)

Just asking as that question popped up quite a few time in the last weeks/months and as the "seed" of pfsense spreads it attracts more users not that adapt with the english language or expert lingo.

                    • that would be a big investment.  However, other people have undertaken Portuguese and Japanese translations.

                    • yes, it's possible.  Renato is currently tasked with setting up the translation tools again (they were originally in Brazil).

                    • It wouldn't be "tolerated", it would be welcomed, especially if you worked with us to comply with the usage on the marks.

Is the version listed on thebookpatch.com legit? I'm guessing no.

I can see that would be a big investment and sincerely welcome it, that there is a movement for translation of the original one! Happy to help if I can shed out a few spare moments :)
In my third question I wrote "tolerated" as I wasn't quite sure how to proceed with your trademarks as I've seen you defend it quite vigorously in the past (and I can understand that!).

So if one (say me for the sake of argument and example) would like to write a (perhaps short) piece of documentary in some kind of self-publishing/print-on-demand way, how would that 'collide' with you guys and the use of "pfsense" in this book(let) or perhaps the use of the pfsense logo? If it is clear, that the author isn't afiliated with the project/company itself, would that count as e.g. fair use? Would there have to be a fee negotiated for?

                          Hi,

I am still waiting for a release date of the new pfsense 2 book. I realize you can download it with a gold membership, however I'm not interested in a downloaded copy. I would like to purchased a book. Is there any new news on an actual book release date or have you decided not to publish it. If you have decided not to publish an actual book are the any other actual books that you would recommend in its place, I have the original book and I still reference it, but , I'm looking for a more current compliment to that book. Not interested in printing out 400 pages and putting them in a binder. I want a book. I would appreciate not being led along with anymore false promises, gold membership doesn't give me a hard copy of the book. If it did I'd have it already.

I imagine this is already known but a Monday, December 30, 2013, 12:51:08 AM version of pfSense-book-21draft is floating around…

We are aware that there are people who ascribe zero value to anything we produce (the releases, the book, hangouts, all of the infrastructure around the project, etc.) yet are quite willing to run the software, or even sell it to others, giving nothing back to the project.

The strategy was documented much earlier this year.  The book, when published, will be based on 2.2.

First we have to get the Gold offering in better shape, and, of course, release 2.2.

Asking questions on the forum isn't recoomended if you want a timely answer.

To prevent confusion it may be advisable to update the information on https://www.pfsense.org/get-support/#documentation "A print version of the 2.1 book will be available in 2014."

Both version and date is wrong, but it keeps the dream alive.
