How to block whatsapp and similar messengers.
-
Hi
We want to block whatsapp and similar messengers using IP or squid please help me from this problem. I tried deny the chat in filter rules but not worked and I tried using lan rules with some net ip those also not given the accurate output. Please help me. -
You'll have to install squid3 as proxy server + squidguard with WPAD configuration. Read more about this:
Install squid3 -> https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=squid+squidguard+pfsense
Config WPAD -> https://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/WPAD_Autoconfigure_for_SquidSearch on the forum for more information. Feel free to ask

Thanks for your reply but when we install squid3 and squidguard it is telling mod_security error for some wordpress sites and others.

The only way to block an app is to find and block 1) the traffic on custom ports that the app uses, and/or 2) access to the servers the app uses. #1 is hard if the app uses a common port like 80 to talk to random addresses. #2 is hard if the list of IP addresses used by the servers changes dynamically. Find out which port(s) WhatsApp uses and if it talks to a control server.

I installed squid3 and squidguard and I blocked some sites like shopping etc with shalla blacklists now how can I block whatsapp for mobile phones.
As u told to block port no 80 we are running webservers with the same port and we may require that port to be opened.
Can u please help me out from this. -
I told you what you need to do. I'm not going to do it for you. Use Google to find out the ports/servers of the app you're trying to block.

Cyberoam Firewalls have application filtering to block applications like whatsapp, but pfsense doesn't deserve it. No positive replies, forum used for make to understand and to give atleast links to find the answers. We know trying in google don't give nonsense advice.

Whatsapp and other such sites use common ports (eg: 80, 443, etc), so blocking the port won't work. You can try to find all the URLs relevant to whatsapp and other sites and block those instead. Contrary to what you suggest, Google has coughed up some relevant info on whatsapp specifically. You can start by using this:

Firewalls like Cyberoam are paid-for NG firewall systems which have updates regularly uploaded to their application lists/threat lists/etc, so they will certainly have more up-to-date application filtering. If you want to pay for a commercial solution then nothing's stopping you.

Sorry but no. We have told you what you need to know without doing your job for you. Muswellhillbilly even Googled a link for you to start with so it doesn't look like you tried very hard.

Add all whatsapp ips in aliases and create block rule in LAN.
