Well if was working, and then you lost wifi sounds like the router was having issues..  Get a better one, get a REAL ap - say something from the unifi line.. The lite AC model is $89… .. This is going to be way better wifi coverage.. Especially if placed correctly and mounted as AP are intended to be mount in the ceiling for best coverage..

"make a good pci wifi card"

There isn't any ;)  I am not aware of any card that works on pfsense/freebsd that supports AC.. Why would you not want AC support?  And very limited that are listed as support for hostab..  This is prob a bit dated but check here https://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/Supported_Wireless_Cards that has link to spreadsheet with supported cards, etc.

Dude your going to save yourself a lot of headache and issues if you just went true AP vs looking for some card to put in..

Just get a UniFi AC Lite AP. You don't need their controller for a single AP and you set it up with their mobile app in a minute.

https://www.freebsd.org/releases/10.3R/hardware.html#wlan - so it's supposedly supported but USB devices are notoriously problematic. You'll have to ask on the FreeBSD list.

Do you find it on the Hardware Notes page? Does it have an Atheros chip?

Save yourself lots and lots of headache and get yourself a real AP, or use a wifi router you have laying around.. Any wifi router can be used as just an AP..

That is the best sort of help anyone could give you would be to keep you from going down the wrong path..  There is ZERO advantage to having a wifi card in your box to use as a AP..  And many many disadvantages..

Your AP should be in the ceiling or wall placed for best wifi coverage.. Not some pci card or worse even some usb stick in your router/firewall..
