Sharing directories with KVM?

I'd like to run pfSense completely from memory. I'm thinking of creating a basic image and just copying it to a ramdisk at boot time, and forcing the config.xml file to reside in a shared directory living in my HD accessible by both the host and the guest, so changes will be registered at once and not be lost at boot.

Has anyone done something like that? Would config.xml be enough?
