Me ha llamado la atención:
So, for pfSense 3.0 Python will be used to write a new configuration and orchestration system and to expose a REST API into this system.
Por lo que conviene (a los scripters de pfsense) ir repasando python… Este será el lenguaje de scripting para interactuar con la API del sistema en pfSense en su futura versión 3.x

Si, dice eso pero debido a
especially for a bunch of PHP that runs as root.
"un montón de PhP que corren como root" (me huele a que quiere securizar más el indoor del sistema) . Y debe de tener sus buenas razones técnicas para cambiar PhP por Python.. Ya veremos cuando salga el primer Development Snapshot de pfSense 3.0 :)

Parece que hay un proyecto en github que desarrolla una API para desarrollo de pfSense 2.3: FauxAPI - v1

Published and announced under the Development topic last week a pfSense 2.3+ package last implements an API interface for pfSense. Not a whole lot of traffic or feedback over there so posting under the Packages topic herewith.
FauxAPI enables easier dev-ops with pfSense by enabling easy programatic change to pfSense.
