      Hi,

I'm having trouble getting my rcc-ve 2440 to boot after installing with ZFS root. The installation appears to go fine however upon reboot it doesn't get as far as the bootloader.

If I used GPT (BIOS or UEFI, doesn't make a difference) then the serial output just stops with a '/' and SATA light on the box is lit up (not flashing). I've tried leaving it like this for >10 mins but it doesn't get anywhere.

If I select MBR in the installer then I get "Operating system missing" message after the POST screen.

I am installing onto the 60G SSD that came with the unit.

UFS installs boot fine either GPT/MBR and BIOS/UEFI.

      EDIT:

Thought I would add that when I have previously tried with older snapshots I was able to get it to boot past the bootloader, however they were affected by #6894 and thus can't boot all the way.

I'm seeing this on my 2440 today. Downloaded 2.4.0.b.20161223.0723 and did a clean install of auto ZFS with default values onto da1 (onboard flash). Installer had no complaints but when it reboots it hangs with two solid green lights. After a power cycle and letting it load (with it trying to spin) it just hangs, I gave up after about 15 minutes.

I was able to install in UFS with GPT over the zfs install, the installer reboots the machine properly, but I had another hung install. I let it sit for a while, reset the power again and let it sit some more but nothing. I powered off the machine and later came back and upon first boot it came up. I noticed in the console while booting it said it did a check disk because it was uncleanly shut down, so maybe it wasn't actually hung? A couple of reboots via the console menu and it seems to be stable now, booting every time.

I updated the bios to version 6 from version 5 and redid everything with another usb install drive and that didn't help. No luck with ZFS.

Sorry to hear about these troubles. Not sure if it would make any difference but the latest supported BIOS for the ADI units seems to be 08:

          maybe worth another shot

Thanks, the netgate page (https://www.netgate.com/docs/reference/adi-bios-flash.html) listed version 6, I will have to revisit this.

At the moment we're still recommending 8. 9 is special for one specific model. The docs still say '6' because we were about to roll out 10 but it's still in testing. Didn't want to have to update twice, but it may get bumped before too long.

Definitely load 8 on there and try again.

Now I feel nervous, if I installed '10' by mistake on an SG2440 is that ok to leave on there?

Possibly. We never officially released it, and pulled it once we realized it was posted for external downloads.

If you are working OK, I'd leave it. But if you have a problem, flash down to 08

I have installed 2.4.0 from snapshot released Jan 25th to 2440 with 500GB hard drive. Faced no issue with installation and booting up after. Tried to install under BIOS version .8 and .10 with same result. Can provide step-by-step installation process guide if needed.

Thanks for the offer, I actually just managed to get it working myself. I installed the 25th snapshot as ZFS (GPT BIOS) and although it gives a gptzfsboot error it then proceeds to boot up normally.

Clean install with ZFS works now on recent snapshots. Installer hung after selecting reboot but after killing power it booted fine. First boot came to mountroot prompt but was able to load zroot manually. Added kern.cam.boot_delay="10000"  to loader.conf and it loads after every reboot.
