i just got myself a sg-1000 and works fine in production off the emmc, what i wanted to know is if its possible to use a sd card to store the squid cache rather than the inbuilt emmc as i dont want to wear out the emmc

Will kill the SD card very fast unless you get some industrial grade SLC one (hundreds of dollars, yikes). I'd say some decent USB stick would be a whole lot better and cheaper option. The consumer SD cards really are POS.

in both cases of sd card and usb drive, how do we go around formatting and mounting it?

There's a bunch of threads here about this, never tried myself. I'd say using earlyshellcmd (most easy to configure with Shellcmd package) should be early enough to get things mounted before Squid starts, plus should survive upgrades without issues (which I'm not very sure it's the case with those alternatives that involve messing with fstab).

              Is it possible, Yes.

Is it advisable?  No, You really don't want too much to be saved, the more hard disk space the more ram you use.  The more ram you use the slower the device will be.

              In general terms.
