While I believe the pfSense Gold Sub program is worth the money, the book will not guide you step by step to do exactly what you want. Traffic shaping is one of the hardest aspects of pfSense and there are a lot of concepts to properly absorb to really get a handle on it. If you really just want a 4Mbps hard limit on your clients, that can be done via limiters. Do you have enough bandwidth to satisfy your maximum number of clients each at 4 Mbps? With a hard limit, any one client will only get up to 4 Mbps while any extra bandwidth goes unused. Other traffic shaping methods like PRIQ and HFSC can spread the bandwidth around fairly while still allowiing for bursting and maximum usage when there is no contention. You should go to the Traffic Shaping forum and get more detailed help than I can provide. Please see my previous post about limiters.

There is something up with UPNP at this time where I cant recommend pfsense for gaming.
You can hard set each game no problem - but it is quite a lot of trouble where a "gaming" router does it automagically.
I think pfsense is more suited for enterprise, small business and general office productivity networking.

What makes the gold sub worth the money?
1. The book is a wealthy of information. Currently it's around 639 pages of pfSense goodness.
2. The monthly Hangouts that give you a 60-90 minute video session about a specific pfSense topic, usually given by JimP. So far there are more than 30 videos available for Gold subscribers. -

I have been using pfSense for years and I can confirm that upnp doesn't work quite right. On PS4 the only way to get Open NAT in many games (BO3 was the last one I tried) is to manually forward ports and static set outgoing NAT to static for the PS4.

As far as I know the UPnP service on pfSense does not set up static port outbound NAT for the connections which is a key piece for having open NAT on the games. The UPnP service does only the port forwarding part for you.
