OpenVPN join network game?
-
I have followed this guide for setting up openvpn.
https://hardforum.com/threads/pfsense-2-0-1-openvpn-configuration-guide.1663797/However when the openVPN client hosts a game they get the ip of their local network not the ip of openVPN (therefore they cannot host or join a game).
Is it possible for a vpn client to join a local network game? -
Unless you're trying to play older games that rely on broadcasts for finding LAN games, you should switch to a routed solution. It's more straightforward, more efficient and you won't spend hours pulling your hair out trying to get it working.
There are very few reasons to implement a bridged solution these days.

Yes this is the case
you should switch to a routed solution
like Hamachi?? or are you referring to pfsense System/Routing/Gateways setup?

What games are you playing?
I was referring to the VPN solution…. bridged vs routed. Depending on the game/app... as long as you can join the game via direct IP, there's no need for a bridged solution.
Hamachi would work, but I think that's a paid app now.

Age of empires 3 (also 2 and 1), Forged Alliance, Total Annihilation.. the classics

Well first i tried this setup https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdAHVSTl1ys (routed?).
Client Was not able to see the hosted room (direct IP did not work). Then I tried the bridge setup with still no luck.
Was able to ping each other on both examples in windows.
New to openvpn so not sure what to try next.

Just an update Got it all working, was a windows issue (was selecting the wrong network adapter)

Hi, sorry to bump an old case but I am trying to make this work and I was not able.
I did everything specified in the guide and I am able to ping between the computers. But I cannot see a created game in the other computer (I can if I do not use OpenVPN and just connect both to the same LAN, so I know this is not a game related issue).
What did you mean by "selecting the wrong network adapter"?
One thing that I found strange, I can ping from one computer to another but if I am in the computer running the client VPN I cannot ping my pfsense box. And if I try to force all traffic through the VPN I cannot connect to the internet.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

What happen for me was when joining a game when connected through the VPN it was using the local network adapter rather than the VPN adapter, in windows you have to give the VPN adapter higher priority then the local adapter. To test this host a game where it shows you your IP, if your IP is that of your local lan then it has used the wrong network adapter. If the IP is that of the open VPN then it should work.

Sorry for BUMP topic. But i need help about gaming over OpenVPN.
I have several clients which should join into VPN network to play games. All works fine while game supports direct IP like Arma 2, but when we want to join in another game which uses broadcast like Borderlands 2 - no joy.
Does anyone know any tutorial how to create VPN with pfSense so settings are actually allowing broadcasting so we can see ones another game.
Im pretty sure this is common problem and hope someone will help me.
Many thnx in advance.
