Poking around in pfsense while waiting for the minipc to arrive.
Trying to update packages, get the following error in the gui: Unable to retrieve package information.
Performing the same from console:
Pasting some of those url's in a browser reveals they don't exist.
Suggestions? Thanks!

pfSense should have internet access for package installation.

That was the first thing I checked. I can ping various sites through shell. Also in the dashboard, there's no errors when it checks for pfsense updates.

I'm wondering though where did you get the 2.4.0RC version from?
My dashboard shows this:
2.4.0-BETA (amd64) built on Fri Aug 18 00:32:41 CDT 2017 FreeBSD 11.0-RELEASE-p11 The system is on the latest version. Version information updated at 2017-08-20 19:46

2.4.0-RC1 isn't officially out yet. Probably tomorrow.
-
Thanks.. That explains why all the dependencies are not yet in place.

I updated to 2.4.0-RC and it booted up as 2.4.1-DEVELOPMENT. I tried switching from development to stable and it made no difference. Is that expected?

It looks like there were some issues with the repo immediately following the release (ie, dev branch would update you to 2.4.1 and stable branch would say you were up to date). Everything appears to be working as it should now, with the stable branch updating to the RC.
So, you didn't update to 2.4.0-RC, you updated to 2.4.1-DEV, as was indicated by the version number in the update window. You would've needed to wait until they had everything configured and switch to stable branch prior to checking for updates and then you would see the 2.4.0.r.20170821.1122 package.
