    Hi
Does squidGuard (I'm using package version 1.16.4) have a dependancy on an installed and configured Squid (package 0.4.42)?

I'm working on a fresh install on a recycled Xeon server and I can't get sG to start, which is an old story I know.

    Thanks
    Andy

Yes, squidguard requires squid.  If you only want blocking, perhaps pfBlockerNG is a better fit.
