QNAP and AES-NI
-
I recently bought a QNAP SilentNAS for a variety of purposes, including replacing an SG-1000 firewall for my home network.
I just realised that it does not support AES-NI which will render it "end of life" in the near future.
Is this something that QNAP should be addressing, or at least pointing out to new buyers? -
That's up to them, primarily, but keep in mind that:
- The AES-NI requirement was originally planned to come into effect for 2.5, but might not actually happen. We have only just begun to look at 2.5 and if we don't end up putting RESTCONF in there, then it won't have the AES-NI requirement at all.
- We don't know when 2.5 will be released, it's too early in the development cycle to say for sure, but it's still a ways off. This could easily be a year or so, especially if things need to be redesigned to accommodate an API. Sooner without the API, but again, without the API there wouldn't be an AES-NI requirement so the point is moot.
- Support for 2.4.x will continue for around a year after 2.5 releases, similar to what was done for 2.3.x after 2.4 released.
So, in all, there is quite a lot of time left before that requirement comes into effect.

@gil I believe that all Intel processors support AES-NI since 2016. Which QNAP model do you have?
-
Thanks for the info jimp, that gives me some solace.

@gjaltemba
The model is HS-251+ (SilentNAS) -
The CPU is: Intel Celeron J1900
Confirm no AES-NI support.
