With static IP address, pfsense clients cannot access the Internet.

Your not setting a static IP your signing in with PPPoE and that address is assigned..
If the gateway does not answer ping - then set the gateway to be always UP and see if you can ping past your gateway, ie 8.8.8.8 for example.

If you can ping yoru gateway then pfsense would auto set the gateway up..
Add your gateway widget to your dashboard..
example here is mine..

if pfsense shows gateway up, and pfsense can not ping 8.8.8.8 then your clients would not be able to ping 8.8.8.8 either.. You need to contact the ISP.
