So you chose non open source and non free forum sofware. Why?
      Netgate making too much money?
Also changed the domain for the forums.
And so many posts lost in the process.
I'm pretty sure I posted here before (not much but a few posts for sure) as I've been using pfsense for about a decade.
Would it have been too much trouble to provide at least a read only archive of the old forums?
Something doesn't smell quite right here.

The forum changed over six months ago, you are a bit late to the complaint party.

        What? It's open source. nodebb.org

        Netgate making too much money?

        How is that relevant?

Also changed the domain for the forums.

Because we needed a forum for all Netgate products/projects and did not want to run two forums.

And so many posts lost in the process.

        Nope. They are all here.

I'm pretty sure I posted here before (not much but a few posts for sure) as I've been using pfsense for about a decade.

Your old posts are here. Under your profile it shows posts from 5 years ago about using a VPN client from Windows 7.

Would it have been too much trouble to provide at least a read only archive of the old forums?

Yes, it would have been a problem because that means having to maintain a separate server and installation of SMF indefinitely. Even read only. And it would have been meaningless since all posts were converted to the new forum. The only thing that didn't come over was most of the attachments.

Ill say how much I dislike this new forum format once more and then drop it.

I see at least one forum hosted somewhere in Europe that still to this day uses SMF 2.0.15. And many others from the states here. Since Im an admin for a couple of the ones in the state here Im pretty familiar with the decisions the owner made and the process leading to.. Personally Id like to see Europe take their new law and pound sand. If you don't already know that servers log traffic.. and that forums store your personal information (that you freely entered when you signed up) then maybe the internet is just a little to complex for you.

But that said its the choice of the forum owners to say what they are going to use and how so. I wonder how many have gone to their favorite "brick and mortar" store and complained about who they used to build their signs or paint their windows.. And those money saving store cards you use at the grocery store.. who do you think the store sells that information to?

By the way.. Many casinos start building a database about you the moment your face shows up inside on one of their cameras. Complain to them and see how far you get. :)

True, I'm not a frequent poster in forums.

Going to that site I don't see a "Download" link anywhere on the page.
Only "Pricing" and "Start Free Trial".
Where is the source download then?
            Open source my ass.

10 seconds of Googling will help and prevent you from looking silly: https://github.com/NodeBB/

If you go to the Community tab on their site and look at the release announcements, they all link to Github. Of course they are trying to get you to pay them to host it, since that's how they make money, but the source is all there. We wouldn't have used it otherwise.

With your antagonistic attitude, I'm not surprised.

I know how it works, been around for a while :)
The reason I mentioned it is because the end result remains the same.
True open source projects don't hide stuff from people.
It's when there is a clear conflict of interest that this strategy is deployed.
And you know where that leads.

I get that you want to complain/be angry but you are playing by the troll handbook very closely. You keep moving goalposts, now gatekeeping and playing "no true Scotsman".

If you want to rant without basis, do it elsewhere. You won't win anyone over by acting the way you are.
