Am I wrong? Does Pfsense, Captive portal, Squid3-dev captive portal authenticat

First and foremost “KUDOS” to the developers of pfsense. What a great package!!! It works flawlessly out of the box.
Next: At first I thought it might just be me and my lack of knowledge of FreeBSD. But after perusing this forum ad nauseam I found thankfully I’m not alone.
All I wanted is
1. a captive portal where users have to log in to gain access to the internet.
2. A way to get some type of user reports about each students internet use. (a policy thing).
OK so I have to install a proxy server. No problem. Install squid and try to configure. Good luck man. Squid3-dev does not seem to want to log any internet activity in non transparent mode at all, yet alone username and activity using either the captive portal or local authentication option. So far I have seen literally hundreds of posts on this subject with no real answer. Many posts with “you could try a. b. c. d. … and good luck let us know if it works” but no real answer and certainly no solution.
Am I wrong? Does Pfsense, Captive portal, Squid3-dev captive portal authentication work for you?
Please let us know!!! -
Squid + CP => does NOT work. Repeated many times.

Is there any intent on the developers part to make it work? If not why put captive portal in there as an authentication type in the first place?
Someone in on of the gazillion threads I've read so far suggested clearOS, chilli and open ldap but that looked way to difficult to set up any thoughts?Jabo

Does that mean that user should be running CP or Squid on the pfSense box
but both running on pfSense is not running? What is if I use the Squid Proxy server for LAN users and the CP for WLAN

Guests to gain only Internet access? No, you can and probably should run both. The Squid package does a lot of things for for you besides acting as a proxy server. With other packages like sarg or lightsquid you can generate reports about internet activity of your users. It also acts as a cache server to help speed up page load times.
What we are talking about is getting reports on the captive portal users with their user ID instead of their IP address using the Squid captive portal authentication method.Jabo
