Atheros wireless card not broadcasting SSID
-
Hello everyone,
I run pfsense 2.4.4-p2 on an XG-7100-1U. I added a Dlink DWA556 PCI-e card inside which uses an AR5418.
The card is detected correctly in pfSense, I could configure it in AP mode but I do not see the SSID that should be broadcasted.
I'v tried with or without encryption, using different 802.11 mode (g,n, mixed etc...), the SSID never pops up.Note that although, scanning the neighborhood for other AP works as pfSense lists them.
See below the current interface config:
ath0_wlan0: flags=8843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> metric 0 mtu 1500 ether 6c:19:8f:ac:6a:18 hwaddr 6c:19:8f:ac:6a:18 inet 192.168.14.1 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.14.255 inet6 IPV6:6e19:8fff:feac:6a18 prefixlen 64 inet6 fe80::1:1%ath0_wlan0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x13 nd6 options=21<PERFORMNUD,AUTO_LINKLOCAL> media: IEEE 802.11 Wireless Ethernet autoselect mode 11ng <hostap> status: running ssid WiFi-2.4-R2D2-Guest channel 6 (2437 MHz 11g ht/40+) bssid 6c:19:8f:ac:6a:18 regdomain ETSI country BE outdoor ecm authmode OPEN -wps -tsn privacy OFF deftxkey UNDEF powersavemode OFF powersavesleep 100 txpower 30 txpowmax 50.0 -dotd rtsthreshold 2346 fragthreshold 2346 bmiss 7 11a ucast NONE mgmt 6 Mb/s mcast 6 Mb/s maxretry 6 11b ucast NONE mgmt 1 Mb/s mcast 1 Mb/s maxretry 6 11g ucast NONE mgmt 1 Mb/s mcast 1 Mb/s maxretry 6 turboA ucast NONE mgmt 6 Mb/s mcast 6 Mb/s maxretry 6 turboG ucast NONE mgmt 1 Mb/s mcast 1 Mb/s maxretry 6 sturbo ucast NONE mgmt 6 Mb/s mcast 6 Mb/s maxretry 6 11na ucast NONE mgmt 12 MCS mcast 12 MCS maxretry 6 11ng ucast NONE mgmt 2 MCS mcast 2 MCS maxretry 6 half ucast NONE mgmt 3 Mb/s mcast 3 Mb/s maxretry 6 quarter ucast NONE mgmt 1 Mb/s mcast 1 Mb/s maxretry 6 scanvalid 60 -bgscan bgscanintvl 300 bgscanidle 250 roam:11a rssi 7dBm rate 12 Mb/s roam:11b rssi 7dBm rate 1 Mb/s roam:11g rssi 7dBm rate 5 Mb/s roam:turboA rssi 7dBm rate 12 Mb/s roam:turboG rssi 7dBm rate 12 Mb/s roam:sturbo rssi 7dBm rate 12 Mb/s roam:11na rssi 7dBm MCS 1 roam:11ng rssi 7dBm MCS 1 roam:half rssi 7dBm rate 6 Mb/s roam:quarter rssi 7dBm rate 3 Mb/s pureg protmode OFF ht htcompat ampdu ampdulimit 64k ampdudensity 8 amsdu shortgi htprotmode RTSCTS puren -smps -rifs -stbc wme burst -dwds -hidessid -apbridge dtimperiod 1 doth -dfs inact bintval 100 AC_BE cwmin 4 cwmax 6 aifs 3 txopLimit 0 -acm ack cwmin 4 cwmax 10 aifs 3 txopLimit 0 -acm AC_BK cwmin 4 cwmax 10 aifs 7 txopLimit 0 -acm ack cwmin 4 cwmax 10 aifs 7 txopLimit 0 -acm AC_VI cwmin 3 cwmax 4 aifs 1 txopLimit 94 -acm ack cwmin 3 cwmax 4 aifs 2 txopLimit 94 -acm AC_VO cwmin 2 cwmax 3 aifs 1 txopLimit 47 -acm ack cwmin 2 cwmax 3 aifs 2 txopLimit 47 -acm groups: wlan

You mean that SSID?
Is this correct for you location
regdomain ETSI country BEI never understand why anyone would want to use some shit card for their AP, especially with a os (freebsd) that very lacking wifi support..
Your money would of been better spent on just getting some old wifi router to use as AP, or an actual real AP.
-
Yes, that's the SSID that I was referring to.
For the location, country code is correct (BElgium, which is in Europe), ETSI I don't know, that option is set to default.
-
That is EU code for regdomain.
So what does the gui show for the interface under the wireless section?
-
see hereunder the screenshots
-
So did you try change regdomain from other than default?
-
No, I didn't. There are 3 ETSI options, should I try each of these?
FCC I believe that's for the US and the rest is APAC/Korea/ROW/JAPAN so I guess not of any use in my case.

Huh? 3 of them ? BE is ETSI that is for sure..
-
Yes, there are three different ETSI, see below screenshot:
-
that is new to me - but sure couldn't hurt could it ;)
-
Ok I just tried all possible ETSI combination and gave up, I bought a separate Ubiquiti access point and will put OpenWRT on it.
Thanks for providing some feedback anyway :)

Ok - seems unnecessary if you ask me... Their firmware works..

Mmm, I would try an SSID that is much more basic if you ever re-visit that. I'm not aware of any issue with SSIDs like that but I've also never tried to use one.
No errors in the logs, wireless or system, when you apply that config?Steve

Hmm, though my card here works fine with all the settings you had. Maybe a firmware issue?

well if anyone is wondering
etsi 2 -> <!-- ETSI w/o HT40 in 5GHz -->
etsi 3 -> <!-- ETSI minus channel 36 -->
there are probably some place in eu where u can't use HT40 or channel 36
in any case they are commented inside /etc/regdomain.xmlidk but i think you need to enable WPA to use 802.11n and i never used the "outdoor" settings. You probably had the interface up but hostapd is not starting for some misconfiguration, the SSID should not be a problem couse i have something very similar and i don't have any problem with it
