Do not lock the menu bar to the top if that is the case:

You guys are both accurate; Turning off the menu bar fixed to the top of the page and zooming out both are viable work arounds. However, wouldn't you agree that it's probably a design flaw that should be addressed? I mean I'd rather not have to adjust my zoom and/or sacrifice not having my menu bar fixed at the top of the webpage in order to see the entire dropdown menu. Seems like it would be a simple fix for a future release.

No, I don't agree. The entire point of that feature is to lock the menu bar to the top, which makes it fundamentally incompatible with small screens as per the explicit note under the feature. You want the menu locked to the top, but also to move when required. It's either/or. It can't be both.

I disagree, it's not intuitive the way it's currently setup. I have yet to encounter another user that personally wasn't annoyed by this behavior. Additionally, if a website and/or app on your phone behaved this way I'm sure users would be complaining left and right about that. If the fixed menu at the top of the screen truly is the source that prevents the dropdown menu from being displayed on some screens then it should be recoded to accommodate all scenarios. Anything else is just poor design. I guarantee if you were browsing a public website and it had this same behavior it would negatively affect the user experience. The user should never have to compromise their experience because of a setting such as this. At the very least, there should be a disclaimer next to that setting alerting them that their menu may be truncated on lower resolution screens.

I've got an external monitor on my laptop that's running 1920x1080 and my menus are still truncated. The only way I can see the entire menu is to place my browser in full screen mode or zoom out. That's simply not efficient and I shouldn't have to sacrifice not having a fixed menu at the top to alleviate this.

Well, your options at this point are to submit a feature request over at redmine, or code it up yourself and submit a pull request.

                Cool.

                I'll submit a feature request.

I'm trying to recreate this problem that you're having, on my screen here. If I resize the browser window down to simulate a smaller screen, the long menus get truncated.

So, it works, and I can see what you're talking about...

But, if I scroll the mouse wheel down, the entire window scrolls and reveals the rest of the long dropdown menu - Diagnostics in this case. It behaves exactly like @KOM describes above. I get the entire menu, just have to scroll a little bit to get it.

@akuma1x what browser and OS are you using?

I'm using macOS Mojave with Google Chrome and I just did the exact same thing and the menu is truncated still. I can attach a video if it helps.

First off dang @akuma1x your macOS is outdated! Sorry just messing with you!

This is a video of macOS 10.14.6 on Firefox 68.0.2. See if you see what I'm talking about.

I couldn't get the video to attach (assuming filetype not permitted for upload on this site).

Confirmed that it also behaves this way in FF on Win10. Also behaves this way with Chrome.

Just change the Top Navigation back to Scrolls and be done with it.

Nope, mine doesn't behave like that. The whole window scrolls, including the menu, with a mouse wheel roll.

My Top Navigation setting is set to "scroll with page"

@KOM I don't want to be "done with it". It's obviously something that needs to be addressed.

It's probably easy for you to just say that, however, I personally like the fixed navigation at the top. Saying to change it to scrolls is a workaround and not a solution to the issue.

I'm not saying it doesn't work with the scroll with page enabled. I'm only talking about when it's set to fixed.

@Chris_Rodman said in Dropdown menus truncated when viewing on lower resolution screens:

In the six years I've been here helping out, I've never heard anyone else complain about this. Go to redmine and log it as a bug instead of a feature request and maybe it will get some attention.

The fixed option is intended for large screens only.

The gui designers know about this. If there is not a feature request (it is not a bug report as it is behaving as designed) on https://redmine.pfsense.org/ feel free to make one. I would not be surprised if it is rejected outright, however, though a feature request probably will not be.

A feature request with an accompanying pull request that implements the behavior you seek would likely result in a more welcome reception.

There is https://redmine.pfsense.org/issues/8419 and a PR linked on that issue which was closed and has some comments worth reading.

Don't want to derail the topic but perhaps it would be worthwhile to also consider an alternative theme with a left-sided menubar instead of the top-nav for the near future. If you have (and we have!) a multitude of VLANs configured, even if no other menu gets that long, the "Interfaces" menu becomes badly managable with a loooong list of assigned interfaces scrolling down the bottom.
A sidebar-style menu with a list-style indentation and smaller font for the interfaces would conquer that and unclutter the main viewing space. As larger resolutions tend to also add in width, the current design for mobile and smaller screens would still be useful but taking advantage of bigger/wider screens and taking large scale setups with many many (virtual) interfaces into account would be nice :)
