PfSense as a WLAN controller
-
Hi,
We would like to deploy a few thin APs in our office.Can PfSense act as a WLAN controller? So that Pfsense provides the thin APs all configurations ?
We'll need to control the SSIDs, passwords etc from PFSense..
Thanks

No. pfSense is not a WLAN controller.

You'd need to use APs that are designed for that purpose. For example, Cisco APs are intended to be used that way and aren't even usable stand alone, unless different firmware is loaded.

@JKnott ,
Can you point to APs that are designed for this purpose?

Thanks! -
Ruckus, Aruba, Cisco, Ubiquiti, just about any of them.

I am confused by your answers...
Can PFsense act as a WLAN controller for these APs?

No. pfSense is not a WLAN controller for any APs made by anyone. You need a wifi solution not a firewall solution.

I moved from Cisco WAP not that long ago. They were WAP150s and basically, you could set them up as individual APs or cluster them together and use one of them to control the rest.
I have since moved to Unifi NanoHDs and run their controller software on a small VM that runs on the same box as my pfSense VM under Proxmox.

For small deployments I like ruckus unleashed. the controller is in the APs. Ubiquiti cloud keys work too with minimal infrastructure needed. What bugs me about ubnt is you have to have a controller for just one AP.
