[SOLVED] Setup guest wifi on my DD-WRT WAP with pfSense
-
Hello everyone,
I need some help setting up my guest wifi and was wondering if someone can help me out. I have searched around and found a few different possible solutions but I cant seem to figure out how to get it working. Below is my setup:
Host server running CentOS 7
KVM installed (pfSense as a VM along with a Samba/NFS VM [CentOS 7], a local Plex server [Debian 9] and a couple other VM [Debian 10/Windows 10]).
Open vSwitch installed
Host has 2 onboard NICs as well as a 2-port PCIe NIC for pfSense VM
1 port from PCIe NIC connects to my modem, while the other connects to my managed switch
Netgear GS728TPv2 managed switch
Netgear R7800 router w/ DD-WRT firmware running as a WAPHere's what I am trying to accomplish.....I would like to use setup a guest wifi with a different subnet (192.168.201.0/27) and have pfSense hand out the DHCP for the devices connected to it. I have tried to follow this guide (as stated in the first post, this one is geared more towards OpenWRT but should be similar to setup in DD-WRT) however I am unable to get this configuration working. I'm sure it is due to user error, as I am somewhat new to VLANs (I've taken some Cisco courses and have a general understanding of how they work). Can anyone give me a hand/step-by-step with trying to understand how to get this config working with my setup? Or maybe there is a better way to do what I want? I have already got pfSense configured according to the guide I linked to, but its the WAP side that I cant figure out. Might need a little help with the VLAN setup on my switch as well, but pretty sure I have that set correctly. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am more than willing to learn, just need some guidance. Thank you in advance!

I have that link in my post already, which is what I need help understanding since it was done on DD-WRT.

So I decided to take the plunge last night and flashed my R7800 with OpenWRT. I've gone thru and set up the WAP and pfSense (did it remotely this morning) according to the guide I linked to in my OP, just need to set the VLANs on my Netgear switch and in Open vSwitch. Will report back once setup is complete and I have tested.

Just an update.....I was able to get everything setup after flashing my R7800 with OpenWRT. I did a little bit of a different configuration on the WAP side, but all in all everything is working.

@simon_lefisch So I guess your conclusion is don't use DD-WRT for this type of task?

@kevdog Lol yes that is my conclusion. Made things a lot easier. Trying to set it up in DD-WRT was a bit convoluted. Following the tutorial in my OP was perfect, except I changed up the way I connected the main wifi and the guest wifi to my switch.
