    Upgrading from console option 13 gives information like:

    Enter an option: 13

    >>> Updating repositories... done.
    >>> Unlocking kernel package... done.
    The following 3 package(s) will be affected (of 0 checked):

    Installed packages to be UPGRADED:
            pfSense-kernel-pfSense: 2.3.a.20151005.1844 -> 2.3.a.20151006.1908 [pfSense-core]
            pfSense-default-config-serial: 2.3.a.20151005.1844 -> 2.3.a.20151006.1908 [pfSense-core]
            pfSense-base-nanobsd: 2.3.a.20151005.1844 -> 2.3.a.20151006.1908 [pfSense-core]

    The process will require 6 KiB more space.
    38 MiB to be downloaded.

    Proceed with upgrade? (y/N) y

    The bit (of 0 checked) makes no sense to me - so it has selected 3 packages out of 0 ???

    That seems to be in the FreeBSD pkg code - the text strings are in /usr/local/sbin/pkg-static and /usr/local/sbin/pkg - so not a pfsense-specific thing.

    Anyone care to enlighten me?

    As the Greek philosopher Isosceles used to say, "There are 3 sides to every triangle."

      You'd better ask as FreeBSD bugzilla. As noted, it shows "(of 0 checked)" everywhere, everytime. Probably some string for some never implemented TUI "checkbox" feature.
