Using pfSense with VirtualBox
-
Hi,
I'm very new to pfSense, so I apologize if I have a lot of questions. I want to set it up within VirtualBox. I've watched several videos. Most are similar to each other, but none of them include anything about wireless routers.
I'm not sure how to connect things overall. I have a cable modem, a wireless router and a desktop running virtualbox with a single VM I set up for pfSense. I'm puzzled on how I should configure it.
More so, typically a modem must be connected to the router via the WAN port to provide Internet access. I have read you don't want to do that with the set up and that's confusing me. How can you get Internet access without having the router in the typical set up? pfSense needs connectivity does it not? I use powerline adapters for connectivity for the desktop. That connection is provided by plugging an ethernet cable into a LAN port on the wireless router, from there it goes into a switch and from the switch another ethernet cable is plugged into the powerline adapter to provide connectivity to the other powerline adapter for which my desktop is connected to via an ethernet cable.
I'm doing all of this for security purposes as my wireless router has been under attack either from a botnet or someone just trying to get into it. I'm tired of it and I'm ready to put pfSense to the test.
Can someone provide me details on what I need to do to make this work? I'm sure it's not that difficult, I just don't understand the full process.
