Just a heads up, That other open source freebsd based firewall/router appliance released a version based on 12.1. If they can do it, we can. Netgate get with it.

I think you missed something. V2.5 is FreeBSD 12.1 based.

My point is that other company which I shall not name here has a actual release based on 12.1 while pfsense 2.5 is in alpha.

It is not finished yet, however IMHO it is more like "RC" than "Alpha" !!
I am running V2.5 for month now and the biggest problems I had, where not related to pfSense itself, but to the underlaying FreeBSD 12/12.1 !

We haven't released yet because it isn't ready. "FreeBSD or pfSense?" you might ask. To which I would reply "Yes."
Check their forums. There are already posts that show it wasn't a good idea to do it yet.
