I am wondering what version of freebsd 2.6.0 will be based on? thanks.

A specific point along FreeBSD stable/12 which has yet to be decided yet since we aren't close to release. That point will change as it gets synchronized with upstream changes until a point close to release when we stop doing that to focus on finalizing the release.

And there is no estimate on what that may be or when the release will happen.

If it is going to be based on 12 then why call it 2.6.0. I would think it should be it be 2.5.*.

Probably because it will succeed 2.5.2 - but that's just me thinking out loud.

The FreeBSD version and pfSense version are not related in any way.
