ESXi 6 - setting up networking
-
Hi,
I am currently using PFsense as a test VM on my Esxi 6 server. My super micro X11 mobo has two ethernet ports. In my test setup:
I have the PFSense VM setup so the wan cable gets info from my regular network: 192.168.168.x (current Lan, VM thinks its wan). I setup pfsense lan network for 192.168.1.x.When i booted up with wan plugged into network & lan plugged into a PC - everything works great - the VM's on the host & the 1 laptop plugged into the physical nmnic1 port were on the 192.168.1.x network. The PFsense box thinks 192.168.168.x is the internet & functions well.
However on a reboot with nothing plugged into the WAN port (pfsense VM set to autostart), ESXi starts up & cant get an IP, always waiting for DHCP (I wanted to see if it would eventually get an IP from PFsense on the 192.168.1.x network- I will give it a static later).
The test laptop plugged into the lan port doesnt work without a ipconfig/release/renew & gets a 192.168.1.x IP. Should Esxi get an IP from PFsense?
It seems that the way it is configured now - in a production environment, ESXi would get the Wan IP from my modem. I think I am pretty close but no cigar quite yet.
Or should I change the wan/lan options for PFsense?
In my attachment, I will remove the management network from wmk0 - I didnt do it yet though.
Thanks,
Rich

I have the exact same setup, but in production. And yes you are correct. Just make sure your VMkernel has management checked with dhcp enabled if you want pfSense to assign it an ip. After you do that, then you could remove the VMkernel from vmk0
