What does "Left Column Labels" (System > General) do?

  • Sorry for being dense but I cannot figure out what this option does?

  • It does exactly what that description says.

    If that check box is checked, the left column labels are made active (link to that group).  Thus if clicked the first item of that group will be selected or toggled (depending on the type of form item).

    To see it, enable that, then click one of the labels in the left column.

    The main purpose behind this setting is because the left column is a very natural place for thumb scrolling on touch screen devices and thus results in unintended inadvertent config changes when the left column items are "active" (links).

  • Thanks for trying to explain – I must be having a bad day or something because I still for the life of me can't see any difference between having this "on" or "off".  I have tried 2 different mobile browsers (chrome + safari) and it looks and acts the same for me regardless of what the setting is.  Can you give me a specific example of somewhere I can tap or click where I would notice a difference? Sorry to be a P.I.T.A.

  • Visually there will be no difference.

    1. Enable the feature by checking the box and saving.
    2. Click the "Left Column Labels" in the left column.

    The "Active" check box should state should toggle.

  • I give up.  No idea what this does still.  Can't see any difference.

    @NOYB:

    The "Active" check box should state should toggle.

    :-\ :-[ ::) ??? :o

    Maybe it's just not my day.

  • Unless you want to be able to click the labels in the left column to toggle or select the form items then just leave it off.

    The only reason to enable it is for that.  There is no visual difference, only the behavior of clicking the labels in the left column.

  • Toggle what form items exactly?

    I understand what you're saying, there there's no "visual" difference.  But for me I am not seeing any "functional" difference either between having this on or off.  Either way, for me I have to click once to expand the section, and then click again on one of the items beneath it to navigate to that page.  Nothing is selected/toggled/activated/etc simply by tapping on the left nav top sections.

    The form items on configuration pages such as System / General Setup.

    Where did I say anything about left nav top sections?

    Think you are over thinking it.

    1. Navigate to System / General Setup.
    2. Scroll to bottom of the page.
      (this is where you took that snapshot from so I know you can at least get this far)  ;)
    3. Put a check mark in the that check box.  The one labeled "Active" in the "Left Column Labels" section.
    4. Click the "Save" button at the bottom of the page.
    5. Navigate to System / General Setup.
    6. Scroll to the bottom of the page.
    7. There should be a check mark in that check box.  The one labeled "Active" in the "Left Column Labels" section.
      8 ) In the left-hand column where is says "Left Column Labels", click on that text.
    8. The check mark in that check box should toggle (on/off).
    9. Clicking other labels in the left-hand column will toggle or select the first item of it's group.

    If you can't follow that then I can't help you.

  • Oh my GOD

    I get it now.

    Am I the only one that was confused by what this did?

    Anyway, thanks for spelling it out for me so I finally get what we are talking about here
