OpenVPN Authenticate/Decrypt packet error: packet HMAC authentication

  • Hi all,

First I want to apologise if this has previously been asked. I have had trouble locating the info required!

I have one pfSense server with local IP
1 pfSense clients with local IP-s
They are connected together over OpenVPN site-to-site (Shared key, BF-CBC 128 encryption algorithm)
When i setup connection Open VPN tunel works for couple minuts and then it crashes.

Looking at server log i see this massage:
    Process: openvpn
    PID: 21576
Message: Authenticate/Decrypt packet error: packet HMAC authentication failed

I posted screenshot from server log and client log
    How to resolve thiss error

  • Rebel Alliance Developer Netgate

Something between the two does not match. Most likely you didn't copy the shared key from one to the other so they are using different keys.

  • I'm having the same problem… "Authenticate/Decrypt packet error: packet HMAC authentication failed"

and I've reviewed and re-input the keys a couple of times. I  believe this may be related to the recent reset of all of the PIA keys/ports/ciphers due to the Russian activity.

Does anyone have a 'how-to' that includes the most recent changes? TIA.
