Can't get out of Status / Dashboard

For the moment I'm just playing, to see whether pfSense will suit my purposes.
I can log in to WebConfigurator but I can't get any further than Status / Dashboard. In particular I can't find a way into the Rules or other policy screens. The Status / Dashboard screen just shows 3 bullets, the first empty (perhaps this is the problem), the second Widgets (which I can open) and the 3rd Help. An Interfaces widget is open and reopens if I try to close it, and it allows me to get to Related Settings but not to anything interesting. If I Restore to Factory Settings on the console I can reallocate the interfaces etc, but then hit the same roadblock. Should I reinstall from the installation media? If so it's worrying that I can so easily get it into such a broken state.

How wide is your screen? Do you have a "hamburger" at the top? That will bring down the menu.
Else, post a screen shot.

No burgers to be seen anywhere. Not even a boring plain cheese pizza. (See attached screenshot.)
In fact a few things have happened since I posted, too tedious to relate even if I could remember them, and some of them to do with the fact that I can't persuade my cat to wriggle under my desk and swap cables between computers as I pursue several different projects at once.
My previous install started crashing on boot, possibly as a result of moving the disk between SATA2 and SATA0 and/or booting with no keyboard/mouse/monitor and/or booting without the USB WiFi adapter I was using as the WAN port, just to provide a NIC I could write rules against.
I reinstalled from CD and got into WebConfigurator, but clicked the Back button half way through the wizard on having second thoughts about something, which only gave me an expired page error. Maybe that screwed it up, because now I just get the Status/ Dashboard again with no way out of it.

I would be beginning to suspect your hardware is bad.

On install from CD it did come up with some kind of CD error, but since it was a freshly burned CD fresh from the cake of blanks, and since the install apparently went on to complete I assumed that was meant to happen. Looks like I need to burn another CD and make sure I tick Verify after Burn, or else dig out a gash memory stick to use instead before trying anything else. Thanks for your time!

I would switch to a different media to install. I also have failed to successfully install from a cd for the past few versions. I switched to a DVD and it cleared up the cd issues.

really someone still burning installation discs these days? Can't remember when I did my last one.
Just install from a USB stick. -
I recently saw the same.
It was because i was using internet explorer on a windows xp.
switching to a more recent browser fixed the "issue". -
(Yeah, still burning CDs! Got various memory sticks but all with some bootable distro or diagnostic or something on them, but a stack of blank CDs. Found the memory stick I was least likely to need.)
Installed from memory stick, seems to work much better. I now have drop-down menus at the top of the screen which were missing before. I checked the CD by doing dd if=/dev/sr0 of=/dev/null and it seemed to read 600MB ok so disappointing that install from CD doesn't work even though explicitly offered. It wasted a fair bit of time.

It generally works fine. I've probably done it hundreds of times. Still do it often from ISO files in virtual environments.
Not sure what malfunctioned for you.
