      Hello Everyone,

I just bit the bullet and purchased a new i3-6100 based system for pfSense to upgrade my current D525 based system which is struggling with Gigabit internet. The i3-6100 is probably 2x faster than necessary (?) for Gigabit and I thought it might be a good ideal to virtualize the system for flexibility.

Does anyone see any problem achieving gigabit throughput on an i3-6100 with VMware or should I just stick with baremetal in this case?

      Thanks.

should be sufficient. the i3s lack vt-d, so everything has to pass through the hypervisor first. an i5,etc with vt-d would be preferable for security reasons

The i3-6100 does support vt-d. I run Proxmox VE on it with a LSI 9220-8i passed through to FreeNAS and an (Intel) ethernet controller in passthrough to pfSense. Other than that I run a few more VM's on it, and performance is fine. Gigabit I don't know, as my WAN connection is 150/15, but when fully utilizing that bandwidth, CPU usage is only a couple percent.
