Opensource for Virtualization

Hi guys.
Need help. What is the best virtual machine can handle pfSense?
Currently I'm using Proxmox for my servers, but pfsense is not compatible in proxmox
any suggestion?
Thanks a lot!

I've never had problems with VMware ESXi, and it's free to use. Others also successfully use Hyper-V but more people here seem to use VMware. Others are running it on Xenserver as well.

I personally use PfSense with Proxmox, and am not having any issues in my environment as Proxmox is nothing but a GUI for KVM. With that said, I have heard others have best luck with VMWare ESXi

I have it running on ESXi and I've run it in HyperV. What problems are you having? I know several people running this in Proxmox with no issues.

It really depends on your preference of VM software. I would stick with well known name brands such as VMware, ESXi or Oracle as they are the leading standards in VM.
I have used with ESXi and Hyper-V for PFsense. I personally like Hyper-V for my setup, it easier to manage (can manage it straight from the OS desktop etc…). Been running a Hyper-V server at home for about a year now, it's been great. Plus Hyper-V is native to the Windows OS. For ESXi if you want more CPUs etc... the free version is limited in that aspect for resources. (see the free license key specs on their website).
In the end it really depends on preference.

Been running pfsense on esxi for many years - zero issues with it. Currently running 6, plan on moving to 6.5 here soon. Just been on the road so have not had time to update yet.

Running it with Xen but also the XenServer product, no issues since 1.2.x… works fine!
