Can't start squid, squidguard or lightsquid

  • Hi guys

    newbie here

We recently setup a box with pfsense, last version as of today's date.

    Version 2.3.2-RELEASE-p1 (i386)

and went ahead and started to configure some services but we got stuck with squid, squidguard and lightsquid.
we simply can't get the services to start and I can't figure out why.

my configuration screenshots can be reviewed here although i don't think I have a configuration issue: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B5M7Xc9pQKiqcmJySTV6Sm5QZnM

this is the system error log entries that I get with everything related to squid

I've tried somehow to implement what was shared in this post:
    https://forum.pfsense.org/index.php?topic=105399.0
from the command line under diagnostics but I couldn't anything to work.
it's clear to me that I might be missing a file or folder, what I'm not sure of is why would it be missing from a fresh install of squid.

    any help is appreciated.

You have some 2.2.x junk in your configuration. Uncheck the "Keep configuration" checkbox, Save, remove Squid, squidguard etc., reinstall, start from scratch.

  • Hi Doktornotor

Thank you for the taking the time

You, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar

I think I know now what my problem was and how I caused it: I did restore a configuration that I completed from a previous pfsense version after we reinstall pfsense from scratch using the newest version available (without completing any upgrades first on the previous install), since that config restore went through without a hinch I figured that that was not the source of the problem that I'm facing, now I regret having doing it.

in any case i did as you advised, and blew the configuration (found the setting you mentioned in the general settings for the squid service), removed and reinstalled squid and related packages, reconfigure and services are now up

    Thank you so much! :)

If you really need to restore old config (i.e., 2.2.x -> 2.3/2.4), do so from a backup that does NOT involve the packages info, i.e. the one made with this checkbox ticked:

The hacks/harm done to get the PBI censored barely working is sadly beyond any automated repair/upgrade in lots of cases. (Maybe resaving every single configuration tab in Squid/Squidguard etc.) would have helped, but I'd feel much safer redoing this cleanly starting with a sane state.

  • I just got the squid and squidguard working as it was before (fingers crossed as I still need to do some test) but again, I couldn't have done it without your help

will keep the configuration backup suggestion in mind for next upgrade and I'll get a tab screen capture to redo the config which is not that bad.

    Thank you again!

    Cheers!
