      Does SquidGuard work without Squid?
I don't need the cache capability of Squid, but would like to use the URL filtering of SquidGuard.
I've followed the instructions here: https://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/SquidGuard_package
But I cannot get it to Activate the service.

No. Squidguard runs no service on its own.

          Thanks @doktornotor.

For what I'm trying to do….Is that what pfBlockerNG with DNSBL is for?

Possibly, if you can live with the fact that it deals with domains only, not URLs.

Just use squid + squidguard, but set squid's Hard Disk Cache Size to 0 and the Hard Disk Cache System to null.  This is exactly how I use squid.
