I've been looking all over the pfsense forums and Google and I have not been able to figure out why I have only been getting TCP_MISS all over my squid log. I have seen TCP_MEM_HIT, but no hits on any downloads that I've tried such as chrome installers, discord installer, steam game downloads.

Without a lot of manual tweaking, squid doesn't cache much these.  To be cached, the request must meet a bunch of criteria such as name, file size, file date, content expiry policies plus others.  URLs with a ? are not cached, and other dynamic content also isn't cached by design.  There are tutorials online as to how to play with the refresh_patterns and other squid directives.

Hi am using Squid 3.3.8 on Ubuntu 14.04. I have default configuration for Squid config file . The request is passing via Squid but its not caching the contents/images/css , everytime am getting TCP_MISS 200 for each request getting logged in squid access logs.

          ###################SQUID CONF entries #####################################
          acl SSL_ports port 443
          acl Safe_ports port 80          # http
          acl Safe_ports port 21          # ftp
          acl Safe_ports port 443        # https
          acl Safe_ports port 70          # gopher
          acl Safe_ports port 210        # wais
          acl Safe_ports port 1025-65535  # unregistered ports

          acl Safe_ports port 488        # gss-http
          acl Safe_ports port 591        # filemaker
          acl Safe_ports port 777        # multiling http
          acl CONNECT method CONNECT

          Recommended minimum Access Permission configuration:

Deny requests to certain unsafe ports

          http_access deny !Safe_ports

Deny CONNECT to other than secure SSL ports

          http_access deny CONNECT !SSL_ports

Only allow cachemgr access from localhost

          http_access allow localhost manager
          http_access deny manager

We strongly recommend the following be uncommented to protect innocent

web applications running on the proxy server who think the only

one who can access services on "localhost" is a local user

          http_access deny to_localhost

INSERT YOUR OWN RULE(S) HERE TO ALLOW ACCESS FROM YOUR CLIENTS

Example rule allowing access from your local networks.

Adapt localnet in the ACL section to list your (internal) IP networks

from where browsing should be allowed

          http_access allow localnet
          http_access allow localhost

And finally deny all other access to this proxy

          http_access deny all

Squid normally listens to port 3128

          http_port 3128

Uncomment and adjust the following to add a disk cache directory.

          cache_dir ufs /var/spool/squid 102400 16 256

Leave coredumps in the first cache dir

          coredump_dir /var/spool/squid

Add any of your own refresh_pattern entries above these.

          refresh_pattern ^ftp:          1440    20%    10080
          refresh_pattern ^gopher:        1440    0%      1440
          refresh_pattern -i (/cgi-bin/|?) 0    0%      0
          refresh_pattern .              0      20%    4320

          Max Object Size Cache

          maximum_object_size 10240 KB
          ##############################################################

Let me know if Squid 3.3.8 is compatible with Ubuntu 14.04 or not? if not what are the compatible versions with Ubuntu 14.04 as i cant change Ubuntu version.
what changes need to be done to cache the contents ?

Let me know if any changes required in the Squid conf entries.

I think you must have somehow confused this pfSense Support forum with a Ubuntu or squid forum.  No, we can't tell you about compatibility between squid and Ubuntu.

I seen alot of the same thing and wondered even if my proxy was working.  so in pfsense 2.0 I think I started looking for something to tell me how many hits and misses.. I found something and made it work in pfsense 2.0 and up to the latest version as of today. I am trying to make a package for it.

Here is what i did so far for it.
