TMobile - No IPV4 Address - IOS 10.2 OpenVPN using IPV6?
-
Apparently T-Mobile recently stopped leasing out IPV4 addresses. I am told that I need to use IPV6 protocol as VPN transport . Has anyone else been successful in configuring IPV6 protocol as the VPN transport using latest OpenVPN client on IOS 10.2? In this configuration, am I able to use IPV4 addresses within the IPV6 tunnel? Any advise or tricks of the trade? Thank you in advance…

I am on t-mobile. And had not noticed, when I normally vpn in I am on some remote wifi network.. But I just looked and yeah when just on cell I don't see any ipv4 address. Connections to my ipv4 vpn on either tcp or udp fail.. So I fired up vpn to listen on ipv6 (I use a HE tunnel) on udp6 - used a ipv4 tunnel network and bing bang zoom connected. Just because you use ipv6 as the vpn connection does not mean you can not run ipv4 inside that..

Thanks! I have hope. I figured that one could use IPV6 as the transport for a IPV4 network. But, it is nice that you have confirmed it. I will play around…. Thanks!!

If you need more details on setup, just ask.. Its really just as simple as setting up your vpn to listen on your ipv6 address.

Got it to work.. The biggest problem I had was determining the correct external IPV6 address to use as I made it more complicated on myself as I did not have my cable modem in bridge mode. But, figured it out. Thanks again for trialing this so that I at least knew that it did work (or didn't have some sort of bug). Then I knew I just had to play around to get the right addressing and port forwarding. Awesome!
