Any guess on 2.4 gold release?

Just wondering how much longer us SG-1000 folks will need to suffer with beta software from pfSense… When I bought this, my expectation was that this would be actual, released software. But I find myself having to install daily builds several times a week. What's the guess on when 2.4 will go production?

I have to ask, did you have an option on what version of pfsense when you bought the device? If so why install a beta / alpha as one should know there is not often a set ETA on a gold / final release.
Now if pfsense is just straight up shipping devices with a beta/alpha with out telling people, well that is not the way to get your product out there and noticed.

The SG-1000 is ARM-based and so the hardware/CPU support is only in 2.4. I guess that since the hardware is available, the pfSense store decided to ship them with 2.4-BETA (the only/latest available software that supports the hardware.
The daily builds happen every time some little thing is changed in the master repo. Unless there is actually a fix for something you are having a problem with, then you do not have to update. It is just that the dashboard is going to be "always" telling you that an update is available. But I also understand that making the decision to update will be difficult for customers who do not have the coding knowledge to look on Github and see if recent changes are things that they need or care about.

So the SG-1000 is ARM based an only supports 2.4 so I didn't really have a choice. It's a great little unit (I have it velcroed to the D-Mark in my basement). I don't mind running beta code, and I have poked through the Sourceforge repo to look at some of the updates, but I don't want managing this device to be a full-time job. I bought the SG-1000 to be invisible (more or less). So I'm mildly cranky about having to do support on a product that I thought was already Gold.
It would have been nice of Netgate to post a note on the SG-1000 page that the product is currently only supported on beta software. I don't think that that would be too much to ask… But it's nowhere on the product page.

I was hoping that someone from pfSense / Netgate could indicate when they thought a Gold candidate would be ready so I know how long I have to wait and whether or not it makes sense to find another solution for home.

I think that would be a reasonable solution. Just let people know. I almost recommended this device to my mom… Kind of glad I didn't (yet). :-)

Unless you're facing an issue that an update solves, why not just ignore all of these until the official release? Nothing is forcing you to upgrade.

I am trying to track the releases and correlate them to issues I'm seeing and then basically doing an update once-a-week if there's nothing obvious. My frustration stems not from the fact that I'm forced to run 2.4 BETA, but that I didn't know that prior to purchasing the SG-1000. I know there's a certain amount of caveat emptor involved in a new product, but I expect to be warned that the product is still in beta.

I hear what you're saying. Perhaps the pfSense folks wanted to get these units out before Christmas? I don't know, but I do know that I don't put too much emphasis on the release status. All software is essentially beta code that is deemed "good enough" to ship, with subsequent development always ongoing. As long as it works for me, I don't care if it's badged as release, RC, beta, or Alphagetti-O's.
