Unofficial E2guardian package for pfSense
-
I installed it on PfSense 2.3.4 with Squid package and it won't start. I'm sure that is my fault, but configure it is not easy.
-
[
EDIT 2: Reinstalled the package, using the reinstall button and wiped squid cache. Now everything seems to be working properly…I don't know why there's so much inconsistency, the installation and uninstallation scripts definitely need some work to properly remove old binaries, and junk data.
[/quote]Check how often watchdog script is starting e2guardian. Maybe you are getting crashes on daemon.

Looks like I am when looking at this. However, after reinstalling, and wiping squid. I haven't had crashes for the last two hours or so, and by the way ShallaList categories are still not being displayed even on the latest 0.4.2.

Looks like Squid is acting up a bit too?

Your setup is e2guardian with automatic parent or

Manual mode, with automatic parent squid cache didn't seem to work last time.
Client > E2Guardian > Squid > Internet
Select splice all on squid while using manual mode. This prevent e2guardian from crashing on some SSL communication.
I'm using only automatic mode. No issues here.

@pfsensation, I've tested a lot times install, reinstall and uninstall. While testing I was improving the install and uninstall process.
All the fixes I've included on 0.4.2.2 when you have time, let me know if it gets more consistent on upgrades, install, uninstalls and reinstalls.

Thank you very, very much Marcello!
On the older version, I got these crashes below, even with splice all on squid.

Thank you very, very much Marcello!
The first uninstall will run your current(v0.4.2) old code, so you may get some weird results until next install.

Yeah I did, I had some permission issues. But after uninstalling properly, and installing again. E2Guardian has started again and is back up and running, let's see how this goes.
EDIT: The menu option for E2Guardian under services has disappeared, and E2Guardian itself has now disappeared under service status. I tried a reinstall, now E2Guduardian isn't working at all.
EDIT2: After several reinstalls, I realised some operation in the installation was coming up as "aborted" so I kept trying until I didn't get the message anymore. However, E2Guardian isn't starting…
I'm giving up for now, there's some serious issues on E2Guardian4 which needs addressing. Stuff like this shouldn't exist, but I appreciate that this is a work in progress. And that you are working hard to improve it, but my point is merely that I am having so much trouble in a home environment with a few devices, people using this in an organisation will have a much harder time. Any clues on what the issue maybe? I've moved squid to 8080 so at least my clients can use the internet without messing around with my other configs like WPAD.
-
I have it in production and I'm not seeing 1/10 of these issues. Yesterday I've forced a number of install/uninstall/reinstall combination to see almost all possibilities I can handle with coding.
Not sure why your setup is so different from mine but if it's not happening on my labs I can't see what is going wrong.
On the latest update 0.4.2.3, I've included a fix to -HOST- placeholder crash(at least on my boxes.
Take a look on uninstall process. See if it removes e2guardian bsd package. If not, do it on console with pkg delete e2guardian.
The native gui pkg process is something that I can't change.
EDIT: after any install or upgrade ,I'm going to package, gui, click save then apply, to be sure all is in place.
Blacklist files can be reapplied under blacklist gui if you are seeing missing files on logs.

I've tried everything you've said. Even removing it via console and I'm still having trouble starting e2guardian. I even tried fixing the permissions but no joy.
I don't know what else I can say but squid seems to be in a worse position lol. It completely screws up the main part of some url's for example if a website is "example.com/test" for some odd reason it'll try going to "https:///test".

The etc files are left behind on uninstall. Maybe you should remove them manually in case they have being corrupted. Then reinstall with clean etc folder.

what you get with :
ls -l /usr/local/sbin/e2guardian
and
killall e2guradian;/usr/local/sbin/e2guardian -N?
EDIT Tested on a clean install on 2.3.4 amd64. e2guardian package only.

I feel maybe something got corrupted somewhere down the line, since I one day updated via console by accident. When hitting 13 and updating the actual system (due to the "pkg" bug).

I am seriously getting really frustrated, because Squid is even more of a buggy piece of sh** without E2Guardian. Some websites it can't even load… And when using Squid directly, I don't have Squid Guard so I have no filtering at this point in time, just open dns. I hope I have provided enough info, something seriously seems wrong here. :/
EDIT 2: FINALLY I FIXED IT WOOOW, MY HEAD IS RELIEVED!
I had to download the blacklist again, then set permissions, then re-apply blacklist. And then press the 'play button' and it started!!
