I am considering what OS to use for a VPN router that will be operating at 1 GB/s.  To save money, I thinking of building my own mini computer and attaching antennas to it.  I was told Pfsense does not do wireless and I should look for another OS if I want to incorporate the VPN and and wireless router in one box.  Any recommendations.  Any warnings about making your own wireless router?

Dude get pfsense run vpn on it that would be ur router ur firewall so. Modem-pfsense-ap router.
You're wifi router turn it to ap. Make sure you have ac adapter. I bought a tp-link archer c7 ac1750 for 30 bucks. My pfsense is an old emachine with dual intel nic that is pcie. Damn computer i paid 10 dollars from yard sale. Amd sempron 145 2gb ram nvidia video card the chipset is nvidia and nic. Intel PRO/1000 PT. So fiber box to uverse router/modem then that connect to my pfsense, then pfsense connects to my switch and my wifi connect to my switch. My uverse router/modem has no firewall enable so my pfsense  is my firewall and more.  I'm getting a server rack since my other one been stollen I have to restart all over. My emachine works great i'll tranfer to a server case. And will put a cheap ssd. :) I can do 1gig of tranfer with my setup.

Recommendations: don't do that (all-in-one is not a good idea except for very rare edge cases)
Warnings: The best option for wireless is a decent PoE-enabled AP placed at a useful location.

pfSense can do wireless (did it myself for our holiday home a couple of times for limited space) but doesn't do it excellently. And in 2017 you are limited to n-Standard, no AC. Combine that with Gigabit VPN routing and you are at computing levels that simply don't go along with all-in-one boxes in 2017. There are things boiling to get in that ballpark but not available yet.

BTW: GBit VPN Routing for a mobile, small A-i-O device is just bullshit. Nobody needs that except for beer-talk with people you need to impress.

Hardware wise, I was thinking of going with this:  https://pcpartpicker.com/list/JLFZm8

Though I think I will be going with this case instead. http://www.lazer3d.com/product/lz7-first-edition-white/

Oh boy, if the case is one of your major concerns, then take a consumer router and start painting it or so. That could lead to more satisfying results for you personally.

It has a shelf it needs to be able to fit onto.
