2.4.0 Beta does not reboot, halt system works however
-
Hi,
I have a custom built pfSense 2.4.0-BETA (amd64) built on Sat Jul 29 23:00:29 CDT 2017
The hardware is an ASRock Z270M-ITX/ac (latest BIOS) with an i5-7600K
Rebooting does not work, the console shows that the interfaces are down, then the uptime of the machine is displayed. I have to manually power off the system.
However, using halt system does turn the system off without intervention.
I've tried various things, including https://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/Why_won%27t_my_system_automatically_power_down_or_reboot
Setting hw.usb.no_shutdown_wait and hw.acpi.handle_reboot to no avail, as well as tweaking things related to ACPI and other features in the EFI
It's a little frustrating. Any help is appreciated!

Is there a BIOS update for that system? Any BIOS options that might help?
It's unlikely there is anything we have done to cause that, or could do to fix it. It is most likely an issue between the motherboard/BIOS and FreeBSD.

There's multiple posts complaining of this issue (myself included), I think it has to do with the EFI bios and access to ACPI.
I'm not quite technical enough to fix it myself, I've really tried everything including multiple bios options.

Unfortunately that doesn't make any difference in what I said. It's still something between FreeBSD and that BIOS, and still not something specific to pfSense or something we can likely fix or influence.
Wipe and reload and use a different partition/boot scheme until you find one that works with your hardware.

There are definite bugs in FreeBSD loader using EFI and it has been reported. I cannot even do a UEFI install of FreeBSD. Just hangs.
But I can install ZFS with GPT using Legacy mode and then do a manual UEFI boot from the boot menu. Automatic UEFI boot always hangs on any of my Dell Optiplex systems. Legacy boot works fine.Every other Linux distro I have tested installs fine in UEFI mode except for FreeBSD.

According to this thread: https://forums.freebsd.org/threads/59627/ it appears to be an issue with Skylake/Kabylake generation platforms and FreeBSD. It was fixed in FreeBSD 11.1-RELEASE
Is there a way to pull the ACPICA patch referenced here https://svnweb.freebsd.org/base?view=revision&revision=316303 into 2.4.0? Or will the release version of 2.4.0 be based on FreeBSD 11.1?

Ah, understand! Thanks for your response. Is there any plan to incorporate the patch as detailed by @indigo88?
Thanks!

Once we have a FreeBSD 11.1 base (very shortly after 2.4 releases) then we'll pick it up naturally.
