I found this blog post very informative, thanks Jim.

Just some questions that I haven't found an answer to.
What does that mean for the 2.4.1 branch? From what I understood it was primarily meant for the move to FreeBSD 11.1, as this is now happening with 2.4.0 will it be cancelled?
Should we move back to 2.4.0 RC? If so what would be the safest/best way to do so? Can config backups from 2.4.1 be used when installing 2.4.0 RC?

You can use the config from 2.4.1 and restore it on 2.4.0.

There will still be a 2.4.1 but we won't have to rush to get it out for FreeBSD 11.1 like we thought. It will come along eventually when it's needed.

At the moment, 2.4.0 and 2.4.1 are nearly identical except for a few minor changes that were put in that didn't get picked back to 2.4.0. Your config can work fine on 2.4.0-RC if you reinstall. To get back to 2.4.0 you will need to reinstall, however, the Rescue config.xml option in the installer makes that trivial.
