APCUPSD powering OFF but not powering ON (BIOS After Power Loss ON)
-
Hello
Looking for some help with restarting pfSense box after power is restored.
Running the following version of pfSense:
2.4.3-RELEASE (amd64)
built on Mon Mar 26 18:02:04 CDT 2018
FreeBSD 11.1-RELEASE-p7w/ apcupsd 0.3.9_3
Plugged into an APC Back-UPS NS 1350
BIOS After Power Loss set to ON
Suffered power outage this morning due to storm.
pfSense box performed what I (believe) to have been a controlled shutdown after run off of UPS for a certain amount of time.
The APC UPS continued to provide power to another device for an undetermined amount of time.
When the power company restored the power the pfSense box failed to automatically power on.
Do not know if the APC UPS remained on, hibernated or shutoff.
apcupsd.events shows the following:
2018-04-16 04:18:25 -0400 Power failure.
2018-04-16 04:18:31 -0400 Running on UPS batteries.
2018-04-16 06:37:33 -0400 Battery charge below low limit.
2018-04-16 06:37:33 -0400 Initiating system shutdown!
2018-04-16 06:37:33 -0400 User logins prohibited
2018-04-16 06:37:33 -0400 apcupsd exiting, signal 15
2018-04-16 06:37:34 -0400 apcupsd shutdown succeeded -
You need to check and adjust two things, first is in the APCupsd config:
Shutdown Behavior
- Halt - /sbin/shutdown -h now
The system is halted at the specified time. (default)- Power Off - /sbin/shutdown -p now
The system is halted and the power is turned off (hardware support required) at the specified time. And then check and adjust your BIOS/UEFI:
For instance, with IBM servers, If a power failure occurs while the server is turned on, the server will restart automatically when power is restored. And with some systems in the halt state, that is what will happen.
From APC: Computer will not automatically reboot after UPS has shutdown and restarted
ALWAYS ON: When power is cycled on, the computer will automatically turn on and boot up.
ALWAYS OFF: When power is cycled on, the computer will stay off until the user manually hits the On/Off soft switch.
LAST STATE: When power is cycled on, the computer will either come on or stay off depending on whether it was On or Off when the power was lost.More info here: http://www.schneider-electric.us/en/faqs/FA159550
You need to adjust it according to your preference.
Hope it helps.
Regards.

One other crevet to think about.
If apcupsd power off the system yet the battery never dies/shuts off, the system will not power back on because it never lost power in the first place.
Just something to remember.

@dbaio Thanks for the reply. Never received notification of a reply and got tired of checking for one after several days had gone by from my original post.
Believe the system is set to ALWAYS ON and that the shutdown is POWER OFF.

Would a WOL magic packet from another system on the LAN power on the pfSense box?
