Or I am misunderstanding so please help clarify.
      https://www.netgate.com/docs/pfsense/backup/automatically-restore-during-install.html#Recover_config.xml

      mentions E:\conf\config.xml
then goes on to mention /config/config.xml

Can I use either \conf\config.xml or \config\config.xml on the USB (FAT) memory stick?

It also mentions /config.xml. Assuming this really means \config.xml as it's on a FAT stick. Will this be autoread by the Pre flight install?

I think this page could be a bit clearer.
      Thanks

@robatwork said in Backup documentation - not clear:

"E:\conf\config.xml" is part of the "Configuration from USB during Install" procedure.
"/config/config.xml" is part of another procedure : "External Configuration Locator (ECL)".

No "help me" PM's please. Use the forum, the community will thank you.
Edit : and where are the logs ??

OK I accept that, thanks, but why the change to forward slash? Does this USB disk need to be formatted differently? Also, would /conf/config.xml not work in this ECL procedure?

If you prepare your "ECL" key in an Apple or Linux or FreeBSD environment, that you should read slash "/".
If DOS or Windows, the slash should be a back slash.

Loading the configuration from USB during the installer requires using DOS/FAT32 formatted USB media, thus the Windows-style path in that specific instance. It's the odd one, otherwise we prefer to use UNIX-style paths.
