OpenVPN secure relay - redirect all traffic?

Is the only way to obtain a secure relay by selecting 'Force all client-generated IPv4 traffic through the tunnel' for the Redirect IPv4 Gateway option?

I was hoping that routes could be pushed to the client more selectively (ie. exclude certain subnets), while at the same time push all its Internet traffic over the VPN and out to the Internet from the VPN server?
