Akismet goes by a combination of content and your reputation on the forum. Once you get to 10 it will pass things that it otherwise would flag as spam.

I understand the need to keep the spammers and bots out, but is it really necessary to set the threshold so high? If someone has been around 3-6 months, made a reasonable number of posts and shown that they aren't a**holes, that should be good enough.... It also ruins the integrity of the forum as a source of troubleshooting info-the paste bin stuff may well disappear. I don't know, but it could also be malicious, and akish*t won't catch that.

What does it take to get to a 10?

Looks like you have a reputation of 10... should be able to post your question.

Actually I misspoke, the default was 10, the ham level in Askimet is 5 now.

We don't have a lot of control over that plugin. The only relevant option is the reputation level it goes by.

Had trouble posting anything... I turned off the VPN and tried a different browser, was finally able to start a topic.

Maybe it was the VPN?

As seen before : when using a VPN that is also used by spammers - and you obtain an IP that was used by them to spit out their spams, then, yes, you'll behaving the door shut on your face.

Thanks all who voted me up so that I could ask my question.

TL;DR: Most of these types of problems are about reputation so uou will have to ask for people to vote you up - if you deserve trust, you will likely get it.
